This outline describes the requirements for the Master of Arts in Technical Communication (MATC) degree. You can keep track of your progress on your Degree Audit. For any questions regarding your degree plan, email Dr. Dayley at matc@txstate.edu


Required Courses

ENG 5311: Foundations in Technical Communication                                            

ENG 5383: Rhetorical Theory OR ENG 5326: Composition Theory

Choose 9 Hours of Technology-Focused Courses:

ENG 5305: Video for Technical Communication 

ENG 5310: Studies in English Language and Linguistics (repeatable with different topics)

ENG 5313: Studies in Principles of Technical Communication (repeatable with different topics)

ENG 5341: Software Documentation

AND

Choose 9 Hours (Thesis Track) or 12 Hours (Internship Track) of Prescribed Electives:

ENG 5300: Language Problems in a Multicultural Environment 

ENG 5307: Visual Rhetoric                

ENG 5312: Editing the Professional Publication (repeatable with different topics) 

ENG 5314: Specializations in Technical Communication (repeatable with different topics) 

ENG 5317: Specializations in Rhetoric and Composition 

ENG 5329: User Experience (UX) and Usability Research  

ENG 5335: Technical Editing

ENG 5336:  Document Design

ENG 5340: Discourse Analysis

ENG 5343: Content Development for Technical Communication                                                                

Internship Track:

ENG 5312: Editing the Professional Publication Internship (approved topics)

Thesis Track:

6 Hours of Thesis (taken in subsequent semesters) 

ENG 5399: Thesis A  (Prerequisite: 18 hours) 

AND                                                   

ENG 5399: Thesis B  (Prerequisite: Thesis A)                                              

Note:

With the permission of the MATC Director, students may opt to take 6 credit-hours outside of the MATC program as a cognate/area of emphasis counting toward six hours of Prescribed Electives. 

Students may choose to declare a Graduate Minor. This will add additional required classes to their degree program. 

NOTE:  You are NOT required to obtain a minor or cognate to complete our program.
